MALDIVES & SIDE TRIPS 2007 - 2008
On assignment in the Republic of Maldives, working on Tsunami reconstruction projects. Though sometimes it does look a little bit like Clyde is on a tropical holiday... Male', capital of the Republic of Maldives. A very, very densely populated micro-city in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
I was lucky enough to meet a bunch of local guys that play Boduberu or 'big drum' on a regular basis, and were keen to show me some of the basics. This traditional design of boat in the Maldives is called a 'dhoni'.
Camping on a deserted island with the Kudahuvadhoo team
Diving!
The Housing and Infrastructure Redevelopment Unit

The whole HIRU team

Checking the progress on the British Red Cross project on Thaa Vilufushi, interspersed with some serious fishing. Yup, we caught them all on hand lines. Check out the 'It was Educational' video. Doing some 'lion dancing' with Jeremy
The Side Trips
Resorts
Getting a cheap deal on one of the fancy resorts is the only real way to get a weekend break and to enjoy a Maldivian beach, not too awful of course, but often quite naff places. Unique experience though and we residents were all very spoilt just being able to drop in for a night or two and take off again.
Dubai
Enroute to Germany and stopping off to see the least sustainable place in the world, including Rick and those mad Palm Islands he built...

"So once we get the irrigation in, this bit of desert will be green too."

Trip to Kerala in India

Cooking school in Kerala with Mr Jacob, his mum and their organic spice garden! Sustainable agroforestry and tourism in Southern India.

Trip to Sri Lanka

The tea hills of Sri Lanka. Curious by-laws in an old colonial park in Neuaralia.

Very polluted river in Colombo
